When
mileage counts!

Best in
the Nation
The Art Director's Club of
Chicago this year selected a Sohio billboard poster for first prize in the gasoline
and oil class of their 18th annual national competition.
Sohio's prizewinner, When
Mileage Counts, featured in 1949, displays the old, familiar X-70 globe.
The advertising men who
produced this "best in the nation" are still hitting hard. But their
outstanding talents are now pushing a new, better gasoline—Sohio X-Tane. This
new combination offers every Sohioan increased opportunities to follow up with
personal testimonials in favor of Sohio products.
Obviously, advertising is
doing a top-notch job. Are you in there backing up its efforts? It takes
teamwork to produce, transport, make, and sell gasoline.
(Continued from Page I,
Col. 5) crete formerly used to support
the three-case Houdry unit, which is being replaced by the new construction.
Revamping of the refinery's
cat-cracker will cost approximately
$4,000,000. The modernization program includes incorporating two 9000 barrel
per day thermofor cracking plants into existing refinery equipment.
Additionally, the existing fractionating facilities are being revamped and
incorporated with the new unit. The control room is being modernized to meet
more modern instrumentation needs, and pumps and exchangers are being added to
meet new demands.
Contractor for this work is
The Bechtel Corporation of California. Sohioan Ralph Kilgore is currently
stationed in California as project engineer assigned to Bechtel. Project
engineers in Cleveland are Logan Ross and Eugene Goerke, who maintain liaison
with Bechtel's engineers. George R. Thompson is meeting liaison needs for No. 1
Refinery, and Frank Smartt, as field engineer is the Home Office
representative. W. M. Bennett is chief project engineer.
Although unmentioned, many men
in Sohio's General Engineering Division in charge of
H. F. West are taking part in
this new project. Project engineers in the Design and Construction section
headed by E. N. Salathe receive a great deal of special help from engineers in
E. E. Kerns's Materials and Equipment section and K. N. Thompson's Power and
Utilities section.
"C" Day alone is an
excellent example of the teamwork necessary to success. Refinery personnel,
sales division personnel, engineers, and contractor's personnel had to
completely coordinate their efforts. Trucks which brought the concrete to the
refinery from the batching plant one mile away drove in at the rate of one
truck every minute and 12 seconds. Special unloading docks had to be built, and
traffic lanes established in advance.
When completed the new
cat-cracking facilities will provide a daily increase of 6,000 barrels of
feed-stock per day.
The unit will tower 268 feel
into the air. Total weight will probably be in excess of three-quarters of a
million pounds of steel and concrete assembled into a complicated structure
that will help produce more and better products for the people of Ohio and will
help Sohio stay ahead in the highly competitive petroleum industry.
