O. W. Sippel

Oscar W. Sippel, who says he is Standard Oil's first truck driver, retired May 1, 1930. He had been employed at No. Two Refinery since June 26, 1911.

A native of Cleveland, Mr. Sippel was born April 23, 1885. He attended Mayf1ower School and never misses its annual reunion at Euclid Beach Park.

Back in 1911, when Oscar was hired in the Shipping Department at No. Two, his first truck, and the refinery's, was a White. In those days he worked six days a week, ten hours a day, hauling barrels of oil from the refinery to the depots.

In the years that followed he became a clerk, first in the Shipping Department and then in the Cooper Shop. At the time of his retirement he was a truck driver, having held that position since July 1, 1942.

An active member of the Sohio Quarter Century Club, Oscar also belongs to the Woodmen of the World and the Knights of Pythias, of which he has been color bearer for 36 years.

Fishing and farming are two of his hobbies, but it's the third, clambakes, which has earned him greatest renown. In the fall of the year, especially on Sunday morning, you can frequently find him putting up 350 bakes at a time.

A widower since March, 1944. Oscar has continued to live with his daughter. Mrs. Helen Rejman, at 4957 Meade Avenue since his retirement. He has one other daughter , Mrs. Irene Kempf.

Fire Razes Cottage Home

COVINGTON — At 3:45 p.m., on April 13, Laborer Jessie Lane was in the midst of a day's work at Latonia Refinery. Two minutes later—in answer to his wife's frantic phone call—he was racing home. Their cottage was on fire.

When he rounded the turn near his home, Jessie knew there was nothing left for him to do. The frame house, a mass of flame and smoke, was burning like tinder. All their possessions were charred ruins.

Sarah Jane, his wife, barely managed to rouse Jimmy Allen, three, and Jackie, four, from their afternoon naps and take them to their grandfather's house nearby, where Tom , five, was playing.

She thinks the fire started in the children's bedroom.

News of the Lanes' tragedy was picked up by the Cincinnati Post and Station WCPO. In Eon Wright and Cincinnati the people acted. Cash gifts, as well as clothing, were offered.

One lady promised Mrs. Lane a fur coal that she'd intended to sell. a Covington merchant outfitted the whole family with new shoes; and another man told Jessie to come into his house and pick out the furniture he needed. At Latonia Refinery Sohioans collected $200 to help him get a new start. Knowing Jessie and his aggressive spirit, they say, "He's sure to come out on top again."

More than 100 friends and relatives attended the Sapphire, or 15th, wedding anniversary celebration in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Lapham, shown above viewing one of their gifts. A delivery ganger for Sohio Pipe Line, Michigan, Mr. Lapham's home is in St. Johns, Mich. He was employed by Sohio on April 1, 1937.

"Mist Charlie" Schell, Sohio Petroleum, Shreveport, who lives in this houseboat, anchored on the Mississippi River, near Sohio's Sunshine Field, about 25 miles from Baton Rouge, La. With his new home—the boat—Mist Charlie can travel from the field and across the river to other operations with the greatest of ease.
