Contest Comments
This newspaper is exceedingly proud of the manner in which the Sohio Family responded to the All-Sohio Anniversary Contest.
"What," we asked, "should Sohio do to maintain its position as a recognized leader in the highly competitive oil industry?"
In soliciting employee opinion on this subject we hardly knew what to anticipate. It is a difficult subject, and especially difficult to compress a response into a mere fifty words.
Lacking the popular appeal and zest of the radio quiz contests and publicity contest ventures so prevalent today, we had a good many doubts about our ability to achieve more than a minority response.
But one by one, from Oklahoma, Texas, Ohio, Mississippi, you spoke up. Voice by voice you erased every doubt we entertained about your willingness to participate in the serious, complex problem we had posed. It was a marvelous, gratifying response, 1329 strong.
We are even more pleased by the magnificent vote of confidence rendered the American way by Sohioans, wives, and children who participated in the contest. You proposed hundreds of ideas for advancing Sohio. They ran a gamut of thoughts on advertising, employee relationships, cost-cutting methods, new operations, profits, etc. All in all they constitute a great supply of valuable opinion of use to Sohio management. But one blanket theme was woven in and out of a majority of your replies. It was a vote for continuing those economic principles on which America's free enterprise system is founded.
It was indeed heartwarming to see how strongly you Sohioans, who by geography and position are a cross-section of America, voted for maintaining the tenets of free enterprise as a way of providing for your own security and Sohio's future success.
Gas Price Up One-half Cent Per Gallon
CLEVELAND - Cost of all grades of gasoline sold at company stations was increased 1/2 cent per gallon on May 1.
Sohio's new prices followed national wholesale market trends where prices rose shortly before as a result of increased demand. For example, in the areas lying east of Ohio prices rose from 1/2 to 9/10ths of a cent per gallon on April 24.
Reflecting stronger wholesale markets, this is the third price change effected by Sohio this year. The former two changes were price decreases of 1/2 cent per gallon each.
Excluding tax, current price for Sohio X-Tane is 18.5 cents per gallon, and 20.5 cents per gallon for Sohio Supreme.
Vanderbilt Wins NOMA Office
CLEVELAND - George T. Vanderbilt, assistant to the vice president in charge of Accounting, Home Office, was elected president of the Cleveland Chapter, National Office Management Association.
Mr. Vanderbilt, who has been serving as first vice president of NOMA, is also a national committee chairman on office standards for that organization.
A Sohioan since 1917, when he was employed as a stenographer at Cincinnati, he is married and has three children, George, John, and Joan.

"Well, I may use the money for violin lessons. I like to play the violin. I've been wanting to take some private lessons, but Daddy wasn't sure that we could afford them just yet.
"Two hundred dollars! That's so much money. Oh, I'm so happy."
Doris is in the sixth grade at Moses Cleveland School. She writes plays and speeches and her teachers say she is an outstanding pupil.
