HOUSTON- When the elderly lady came into the grocery, no one knew what to do. She looked small and frightened, and she stood there, talking excitedly.
Her daughter was dying of cancer, and she had come to be with her at the hospital. She was alone in the city and had no place to stay. Was there anyone who would "put up with her" for a while?
The grocery clerk thought of Virginia Schafer, utility clerk here at Sohio's Gulf Coast Production HQ. Virginia lived in the neighborhood. He thought she would help.
Virginia took the anguished mother into her home. During the last days of the daughter's illness, she took turns sitting with the dying girl.
After her daughter died, the mother went home. But Virginia will always remember those anxious weeks when she took them into her life and became a part of theirs. And a grateful mother remembers the girl who sheltered and helped a stranger in need.
